Why choose MAXUM barbells
There’s no piece of equipment more fundamental to strength training than a quality barbell. Every squat, deadlift, press, and Olympic lift runs through it. The wrong one chips, rusts, and loses its knurling. The right one lasts decades.
Every MAXUM barbell is finished in hard chrome or Cerakote – the two most durable coatings available for home gym barbells. Rated from 500lbs to 1,000 lbs capacity and available in 6ft and 7ft lengths, MAXUM barbells cover everything from Olympic lifting to powerlifting to bodybuilding.
How to choose the right barbell for your home gym
Five things that actually separate a good barbell from a bad one:
- Finish coating: Hard chrome and Cerakote are the best options for corrosion resistance and durability. Avoid bare steel unless you’re committed to regular oiling.
- Shaft diameter: 28 – 29mm has more flex/whip – better for Olympic lifting. 29–32mm is stiffer — better for powerlifting squats and deadlifts.
- Length: 7ft fits all standard racks and is the most versatile choice. 6ft suits smaller spaces and is lighter weight.
- Weight rating: For a home gym, 700 lbs is plenty. Anything rated below 500 lbs is not suitable for serious training.
- Knurling: Medium knurling is most versatile – aggressive enough for grip, gentle enough for high-rep work. Check the knurling pattern specifically for Olympic lifting bars.
- Sleeve rotation: Smooth bushing or bearing rotation in the sleeves reduces torque on your wrists during Olympic movements.
