Patented Articulating Functional Trainer Arms
The patented articulating functional trainer arms is a game changer. You can go wide for exercises like chest flys and cable crossovers. And you can bring them together to leverage both stacks at the same time for exercises like lat pulldowns and seated rows.
Smith Machine Cable Integration
A standout feature of the MAXUM X3 is the ability to connect the functional trainer’s cable system directly to the Smith machine bar. This lets you use the weight stacks instead of loading plates, making resistance changes quick and convenient. With this setup, you can perform a wide range of movements, including pressing exercises that drive upward and pulling exercises that move downward, expanding the variety of training options beyond a traditional Smith machine.

Counterbalanced & Low Smith Machine
The counterbalance helps to offset the weight of the barbell, making it easier to perform certain exercises with proper form and technique.
The flatfoot rack design allows the smith machine barbell to go as low as possible which is great for exercises like hip thrusts. Other smith machines integrated into bolt down racks cannot go as low due to the lower cross member.
Stainless Steel Front Uprights
The X3 comes standard with stainless steel 3x3 11 gauge front uprights to keep your rack always looking new. Other brands are powder coated or chrome plated which is not as durable. Some of the most well respected power rack brands offer 3x3 11 gauge stainless uprights as a premium option for a reason so if someone says stainless steel uprights are inferior, then they don't know squat (pun intended).

Standard Commercial Rack Tubing
The frame is built with 3×3″ 11 gauge steel and has 1″ holes throughout making it compatible with rack attachments from other brands. It also features 2" hole spacing which allows for the precise placements of your J-hooks and safeties for those big lifts.
Dual 220 lb Weight Stacks
The included dual 220 lb weight stacks at 10 lb increments ensures you will have the weight you need for all your functional trainer exercises. And for those that need a little more, the included weight plate horns allow you to add weight plates to the stack.

Quick Attach and Release Leg Press Plate
The quick attach and release leg press plates conveniently converts your smith machine into a leg press machine.
Strap Safety Arms and UHMW Sandwich J-hooks
The unique and hefty strap safety arms gives you your bar a soft landing when you need it. And the J-hooks use UHMW sandwiched between two thick steel plates to protect your bars finish and knurl.

What I love:
- 3x3” 11 gauge steel construction which feels like will last a life time
- extremely competitive pricing for this grade of quality.
- ton of attachments
- smooth pulleys , arms and smith machine
- articulating arms give full range of motion on most movements and provide a lot of flexibility
- weight horns so you never out grow the machine
Let me be very clear: I love this machine and couldn’t be happier with it. It feels incredibly solid, the Smith machine and cables operate smoothly, and its versatility is outstanding.
Honestly, the following points are just me being nitpicky. Overall, everything feels great and very well built. You really can’t go wrong with this machine.
Still, here are a few things that could be improved:
- The manual is okay. It works, but it could be a bit more detailed.
- The carabiners feel cheap and the locking mechanism is a bit annoying. I will definitely replace them soon.
- The included 24mm and 36mm tools are low quality and bent when tightening bolts.
- Some accessories feel a bit cheap, though for the price they still offer great value and you can always upgrade later.
- The first weight plate sticker is off-center, and the pegs for adding more weight should be optional. They add weight and my wife finds the minimum cable weight too heavy for certain exercises.
- The weight stack labels use strange increments in both pounds and kilograms.
- The center attachment adapter may not fit properly if the legs aren’t perfectly straight; the manual should suggest testing the fit before adding the weight plates.
- The leg press attachment angle feels slightly off. Maybe that’s just personal preference.
Recommendation: The whole industry is waiting for leg extension/curl attachments from other brands I’d love to see Maxum release one.
